For those who know, especially if you were born and raised here, you already know Bear Rock is one of the most iconic spots on Guam. But even for the tourists who visit, this is the landmark everyone talks about and travels down south just to see. I painted this because it’s a huge part of my cultural roots and the history of Inalåhan. This village is actually one of the oldest on the island, established way back in the late 1600s, and it’s like a time capsule for our deep CHamoru culture. When you head to that side of the island, you can still see the spirit of the 1800s in the layout and the historic houses from the early 1900s that are still standing today. I wanted to capture that feeling of a place that hasn't changed even after all this time. This painting is about that connection to the land and showing love to the history of our people, whether you’ve lived here your whole life or you’re just visiting our island for the first time.
